Coming “very soon” to Playstation VR 2, Red Matter 2 will look even more impressive thanks to the horsepower of the PS5.

The first installment quickly became a benchmark for graphics on mobile VR headsets such as Quest 2 and Pico 4. The sequel to the sci-fi game, which was released last summer, has managed to surpass the original.

My colleague Jan reviewed Red Matter 2 and spoke highly of its graphics. “At times, I can hardly believe what the heavily modified Unreal Engine gets out of the XR2 chip,” Jan wrote.

“From glowing particles to laser beams, light refracts and reflects in the environment in multiple ways. Particularly impressive are the tarnished glass panes, on which even the finest scratches and smudges affect the result.”

Jan also liked the gameplay, although bugs and a lack of polish spoiled his overall good impression.

High-end graphical features for Playstation VR 2

This morning, Vertical Robot announced Red Matter 2 for Playstation VR 2. On Twitter, the studio listed the advantages of the PSVR 2 version.

According to the announcement, the game runs at a native 120 fps and doesn’t use Sony’s projection technology. Something that has become a selling point for VR studios.

Support for Foveated Rendering is said to provide “unparalleled clarity”. This rendering technique uses eye-tracking to determine what the user is looking at and renders only that area at a higher resolution.

The studios also promises remastered textures with 4K resolution as well as enhanced lighting, shadows and bloom.

Regardless of the software improvements, the high-contrast OLED display of the Playstation VR 2 should present a much more atmospheric sceneries than Meta Quest 2.

Red Matter is also available for PC VR, but the PSVR 2 version may surpass it in terms of presentation. We can’t judge that yet because the studio hasn’t released any image or video material. According to the official tweet, the VR game is coming “very soon”.
