A Reddit user got the sci-fi role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 to run on the Apple Vision Pro. However, he does not recommend trying it at home.

In a video, Reddit user “Kengine” shows how he got Cyberpunk 2077 to run on the Apple Vision Pro. “I’ve managed to get Cyberpunk 2077 running in full VR on the Apple Vision Pro, and OMG does it look absolutely stunning,” he writes. “It’s a bit rough around the edges and needs further tweaking, but it’s quite impressive nonetheless.” What impressed Kengine less, however, was the effort that went into it.

How to get Cyberpunk 2077 running on the Vision Pro

Kengine uses the ALVR software via a developer account, which can be used to stream VR games from a PC to a VR headset. On the hardware side, he uses two Tundra Labs SteamVR USB dongles connected to Valve’s Lighthouse tracking system. However, he has to recalibrate them every time he starts the software. Kengine uses the OpenVR Space Calibrator to do this and an Xbox controller to navigate through the game.

“ALVR on the host side has a lot of settings, and it took a few weeks of configuring to get it to work smoothly. For Cyberpunk 2077, I’m using the latest Luke Ross VR mod with AER2.0 using 1/2 rate on a RTX4090”, Kengine writes on Reddit. “For my network I’m using an Asus ROG Wifi 6 router which is about 5 to 6 feet away connected directly to my PC as an access point and only connected to the Vision Pro.” He also tweaked the network settings in Windows as much as possible.

Although Kengine is enthusiastic about the immersion and outstanding image of the Vision Pro, he advises against imitating his project: “As cool as all this looks, I still wouldn’t recommend anyone to go through all this work to experience it.” For one thing, the cost is immense. In addition to the $3,500 Vision Pro, you need a powerful computer and the SteamVR tracking system, which is not cheap either. On the other hand, the configuration work gets out of hand.

“The developer account is limited and the code has to be rebuilt every few days. It’s not ideal at all. The sheer amount of work and configuration is absolutely not for the faint-hearted”, explains Kengine. “For the overall cost of all the gear and the end result, you’re much better off sticking to other VR headsets to play games.”
