The 2004 shooter classic Far Cry is now fully playable in VR, including support for motion controls.

Far Cry was released in the same year as Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, and like them, set new standards for the first-person shooter genre.

The PC game from the German game studio Crytek impressed with dense vegetation, realistic water, an expansive game world, a surprisingly witty enemy AI, and large maps that offer plenty of freedom to explore and take out enemies. This combination evolved into a successful shooter formula that has spawned five sequels to date.

Experience Far Cry in a new way

German coder Holger Frydrych, who is also the lead developer behind the Half-Life 2 VR Mod, has been working on the Far Cry VR mod for quite some time. The recently released version 0.5 adds full motion controls for the first time.

This means that you can hold your guns naturally with your hands, use two hands to stabilize the guns further and physically swing the machete. Frydrych has even thought of left-handed support.

The VR mod supports 6 DoF and room-scale VR, so you can physically sneak up on enemies and peek out from behind crates during gunfights. It also supports seated gaming.

If you’re nostalgic for Far Cry and the old days of shooters and own a PC VR headset, you now have a good reason to revisit the classic. The summer temperatures should also support the immersion.

What you need for Far Cry VR

On the official Far Cry VR website, you’ll find the download link for the VR mod, detailed installation instructions, and tips on calibrating perspective and fine-tuning controls (if desired).

If a new version is released, you can simply run the new installer, game saves or settings will not be affected.

The Far Cry VR mod requires the original game, a PC, SteamVR, and a PC VR compatible headset. You can purchase Far Cry on Steam or GOG.com. It costs $9.99.
