The Quest-exclusive VR role-playing game Asgard’s Wrath 2 is getting a rogue-lite mode. In a Deep Dive video, the developers give a first glimpse.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 will be the flagship VR game for the upcoming Meta Quest 3. The exclusive title for Quest 2 and Quest 3 presented at this year’s Meta Gaming Showcases is expected to be the most extensive VR game for mobile VR headsets to date, with around 60 hours of gameplay.

Since the announcement of the role-playing giant, lead studio Sanzaru Games has been providing insights into the game modes, game world, and gameplay in a monthly Deep Dive trailer series. This month, the developers present the “Uncharted Rifts”.

Procedurally generated VR dungeons

After last month’s Deep Dive trailer showcased the “Divine Transformations” in Asgard’s Wrath 2, this month’s Deep Dive trailer showcases the procedurally generated “Uncharted Rifts”, an optional game mode that lets you fight your way through randomly generated dungeons.

The level layout is redesigned each time you play, which should allow for countless unique playthroughs. How the environment looks is partly up to you.

“Each time that you go into the Uncharted Rifts, it’s a completely new layout based on your hero and which hero loadout you choose for the Rifts,” Mari Kyle, Senior Producer at Oculus Studios. The main goal is to collect valuable treasures, weapons, or resources and survive as long as possible.

Epic boss battles and a dash of Rogue-lite

Any items you capture in a run can be carried over to the main game. But there’s a (rogue-lite) catch: If you die in the dungeon, all those items are lost – unless you stash them safely before you die on-screen.

“Say you need an item in order to make an armor piece for a character in the main questline. You can go into the Uncharted Rift and harvest these resources and send them back using features we call dimensional wells,” Kyle explains.

Each dungeon run ends with a “Divine Trial,” a boss level of sorts. During this trial, you’ll face gigantic bosses or fight multiple enemies at once.

Challenges for exclusive rewards

Another challenge in Uncharted Rifts is the “Weavers of Fate”. They will give you tasks to complete in the dungeons. In return, you’ll receive exclusive rewards.

“They’ll ask for you to kill a certain amount of a certain type of enemy, they’ll ask for you to find a certain amount of treasure chests in a Rift,” Kyle explains. “You’ll be able to complete these challenges during your run and get some cool perks after you’ve completed those as well.”

In addition, the longer you stay alive in Uncharted Rifts, the more “Revelations” you unlock. You can activate up to three of these buffs at a time during a Rift run, giving you passive abilities or skill enhancements.

Social experience announced for Asgard’s Wrath 2

A new social gaming feature has also been announced. At the end of each dungeon, players will have the option of leaving a “Divine Soul” or a “Dread Soul”. A Divine Soul will assist other players by fighting side by side, while a Dread Soul will act as a mini-boss.

The game system is similar to the multiplayer and PvP components of Elden Ring. However, in Elden Ring, you can appear as a helping or attacking soul in the game world of other users. In Asgard’s Wrath 2, however, your “clones” act independently.

Interestingly, the souls mimic the play style of the summoning player, using the same weapons and items. So if you summon a Dread Soul, the computer-controlled character will behave similarly to you when fighting a human player. The idea is to make duels as dynamic and unpredictable as possible.
