The VR horror adventure Titanic: A Space Between for Quest 3 takes you aboard the legendary ship and gives you the creeps.

FACTS

Titanic: A Space Between is a time travel horror adventure in VR that takes you back to the RMS Titanic. The VR game focuses on realism and immersion, offering a rich mix of puzzles and escape mechanisms embedded in a compelling story.

Developer BoomBox Games recently released a launch trailer and has set February 14, 2024 as the official release date in the Meta Quest Store.

CONTEXT

Narrow corridors, rising water levels — this VR game is not for the faint of heart

In Titanic: A Space Between, you are sent back to the Titanic as ‘specialist’ Hendrik van Eden to solve the mysterious disappearance of his colleague Diana. There you have to fight your way through the depths of the gigantic passenger ship, manipulate the environment and solve puzzles in order to leave the ship deck by deck and escape the rising water.

OPINION

Titanic: A Space Between has me hooked

In the launch trailer, the horror game developed for the mobile VR headsets Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro presents itself in impressive graphics. Especially when you consider that the in-game footage shown was taken from a Meta Quest 2.

The flooded Titanic — at least in the trailer — is already very close to PC VR quality. This could increase the creep factor, as a recent study indicates that shocking VR experiences benefit from graphical realism.

The ship’s narrow corridors are full of detail, and the water in particular looks very realistic. Developer BoomBox claims to have achieved the high graphical quality “through countless optimizations and tricks”.

In terms of gameplay, Titanic: A Space Between promises an interesting mix of oppressive horror, puzzles and a (hopefully) thrilling story. Storytelling in VR adventures often leaves a lot to be desired. In this case, however, it is the unusual setting and the combination of time travel horror and the historical scenario of the Titanic that makes it so appealing to me.

If the game delivers what the trailer promises and is convincing both in terms of content and technology, we could be looking at a potential VR horror hit at the Quest in February. I’m definitely looking forward to it.
